Frequently Asked Questions
Are you online only or do you offer face to face therapy too?
I do both! My office is based on King Street - just off market square in Nottingham. Online sessions are ran via MS Teams. If you’re somebody who travels a lot for work or have other irregular schedules that make it difficult to stick to face to face each week, you’re welcome to mix and match between face to face and online/telephone.
Do I have to have a certain amount of sessions?
Nope. If you get a couple of sessions in and you believe that I’m not the therapist for you, then no sweat! It happens! Someone might be the best therapist on the planet and they still won’t be the right therapist for everybody; and I don’t believe it’s fair to force clients into a certain amount of sessions if it’s not right for them.
Do I have to have weekly sessions?
Well. I’d always encourage new clients to have at least a month’s worth of weekly sessions if possible, as I find it really helps to establish that therapeutic relationship in the beginning. With that said, I completely understand that everybody has a different budget and if you need to have fortnightly sessions then that’s fine too. Availability might be slightly more limited with fortnightly slots and/or you might need to wait a week or two to jump in on a fortnightly free slot (i.e., when another fortnightly client in the same time slot is having their week off). Clients who have been working with me for a long time/have seen lots of development might wish to drop down down to fortnightly, monthly or even ad hoc slots. That’s certainly something we can discuss in due course.
What if I don’t have one big thing that happened to me?
You don’t have to have a huge trauma skeleton hidden in your closet, or be a swanky LA type to get yourself in therapy. You might be somebody who has tried a few different things to improve their wellbeing but still find yourself stuck in a cycle, you might be confused about why you react the way you do to certain scenarios or people, or maybe you just want to talk about your life with somebody who doesn’t already have an opinion about you. Therapy is for anyone who wants to try therapy.
How long will it take until I'm fixed?
Ah. A slightly more complex question. Importantly, you are not a broken washing machine. You are a human. Maybe you’ve been through some bad things that make you feel like you are broken, but you are NOT defective. It is not a failure to react to your environment and experiences.
That aside, it’s crucial to note that therapy is not a passive process. You can turn up every week for 3 years and talk and talk and talk, but ultimately it’s up to you to reflect on the things you might have learned or processed in the therapy room and begin to implement any changes you wish to make in your day to day life.
For some people maybe they just need a couple of months of therapy. For others, they might enjoy the process of challenge and development and stick to it for years. It really is an individual journey.
Is it a confidential service?
Mostly. There are some instances where I would be obligated to share information with social services/the police/your GP. Things like if there were any child safeguarding issues, you disclosed you’d been involved in act of terrorism or if I were to become concerned that you were very actively suicidial. We will have a really good chat through the full confidentiality policy in your first session so you feel comfortable.
